“A bad attitude is like a flat tire… you can’t go anywhere until you change it.”

We all hold the power to change or choose our attitudes and perceptions.  This means nothing outside of us has to change in order to be happy, peaceful and kind to others.  The only thing that has to change is our attitude.  We can change our attitudes by peacefully choosing the thoughts we allow ourselves to think.

We don’t need to blame others for our unhappiness.  We don’t need to hold others accountable for our stress levels.  We don’t need to demand that others change their perceptions.  We only need to accept healing and responsibilities for our own attitudes.

We are powerful beings and have been given the gift of free will or choice.  We can choose chaos (fear) or peace (love). How freeing to know our well-being and happiness lies within our own hands.  How freeing to know that moment by moment we have the potential for more joy simply by the attitudes and perceptions we choose.

It is the attitude of the heart that has biggest impact.  Not only in our own lives but in the lives of others.  When our hearts are full of love and therefore peace, we are offering others our greatest treasures.    

The HeartMath Institute has scientifically proven that the heart, not the brain, is the most powerful neural-network within the body.  Its electrode-magnetic field is 5,000 times greater than that of the brain.  The heart is literally communicating with the brain in every given moment of the day.  It is the first organ developed in the human body and has an intelligence all of its own.  The heart is also constantly pulsating out and affecting the environment.

The question becomes:  What lies within your heart?  What beliefs do you hold in your heart that are driving your attitudes and perceptions?  Simply put, if they are not of love they are of fear.  A fearful attitude creates havoc on all levels of our existence, internally and externally.   

Here are three powerful mantras or affirmations that work for me whenever I am in need of an attitude adjustment.  They are extra beneficial when accompanied by deep breaths:  

I AM choosing peace instead of this.

I AM choosing love in this moment.

I AM choosing joy here now.   

If these don’t work for you, create your own.  Simply make note of what makes you happy to think about and what makes you unhappy to think about. Then create the affirmations from the happy thoughts.  What is important is to let go of the tension.  Gently lean into gentleness.
