Let’s face it! Nowadays, the whole society is walking on edge because we are bombarded with life activities whether it is work, family, marriage etc. which often times result in a personal breakdown of some sort. I am as guilty as you are on this! As a working mother of three children under the age of 10 years old, sometimes, I feel overwhelmed and stressed. Personally to restore my sanity, I do consistently enjoy ladies night out with my girlfriends. Meaning, the dads are at home with the kids while mothers hang out and have fun. Mental health is defined as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life…” (World Health Organization). Mental health is a complex and important public health issue that constantly needs attention because it is a disorder that knows no boundaries.
Mental health problems can affect the way people think, feel and behave and often results in detrimental outcomes. Unfortunately, the rates of children and adults suffering from mental health disorder continue to increase (e.g. 1 in 5 adults are affected), so also is the stigmatization around it. Collectively as a society, what happened to our empathy and compassion? Because often times, I think we are oblivious to the fact that our children, co-worker, parents, family members are suffering from this disorder in some form (some in silence!). It is important to lend our ears and make ourselves available when those affected are looking for that support or someone to chat with. This is the least we can do! Be available! Be supportive!
Mental health is as important as your physical health so it is important to balance both! This is a serious public health issue that calls for us to take a minute and check in on ourselves, friends, and loved ones because I guarantee you, maybe you or someone you know is suffering in silence.
If you or someone you know is suffering from mental illness, I urge you to seek help! Do know that, you are not alone and there is NO shame in talking about it publicly or privately. Recognize the signs below and get help if needed! If needed, we can connect you to professionals.
